Jakande asks Nigerians to guard democracy jealously

FORMER governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande yesterday urged Nigerians to put their destiny in their own hands by guarding jealously the democratic governance in Nigeria.

LAGOS - FORMER governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande yesterday urged Nigerians to put their destiny in their own hands by guarding jealously the democratic governance in Nigeria.

Alhaji Jakande gave the advice at a book launch written in his honour by a university don, Professor Lai Olurode. Those who were at the book launch included the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Ibidapo Obe; Commissioner for Special Duties in Lagos State who represented Governor Bola Tinubu; and Osun State governor represented by the state Attorney-General, Chief Adedeji Gbadegesin among others.

The author of the book titled 'The Life and Times of LKJ", Professor Lai Olurode of the University of Lagos at the public presentation of the book identified several flaws in the on-going political National Conference.

According to him most of the members of the conference were government appointees and that care must be taken for the conference not to end up as a mere jamboree like the previous exercises in the country.

Olurode acknowledged that allthough the conference was set up with a view to put in place a document which will be a guiding principle for a fiscal democracy where people will be less oppressive by those that are entrusted with the running of the day to day administration of the country but he expressed his reservation that if care is not taken it may be doomed.

He bemoaned the cost of electioneering explaining that if the cost was not brought down, office holders would continue to see politics as an investment from which profit must be exacted.

The author stated that the effort of the federal government in the fight against corruption must be recognized adding that the attitude of people to electioneering must change by not selling their votes to the highest bidder.
